Our messing comes to an amount of $8 per month without refreshment. At first our messing was about $4 per
month and then we had our food to our satisfaction, which food we cannot get now unless we spend $12 per man per month. The
average amount of our fowl meat in the mess for each man comes
to 75 cents per month and many men of us have to feed ourselves
with extra meat outside the mess and we should all have more or
less milk sugar while tobacco for Mahomedans and a little
drink for Sikhs.

Price of drink in the Canteen is nearly doubled. The price of
almost every other article of food and wear has been highly
increased.
If a member of the Force is to be convicted by
the Captain Superintendent of Police for a crime of negligence
and a certain sum of amount is imposed on him as fine, he then finds himself in a great difficulty in order to meet the follow- -ing expenses and each member is bound to spend some money more
or less as mentioned below:- Milk, Clothing, Tea, Sugar, Shaving,
Shoes, Tobacco, Drinks of Liquor, Stamps, hires of launches,
tram and rickshas, also each Sergeant pays 50 cents and con-
-stable 30 cents to the boy for cleaning boots and uniform in
each month.
Besides this we also pay all the cooks from our
pocket.
